CALDWELL HAS THE LAST LAUGH; S

GARY CALDWELL left the Black Country on Saturday afternoon sporting a smile of satisfaction after helping Wigan to a first clean sheet in seven matches. A couple of hundred miles north, a black mood had descended over his former place of employment.

The Scotland defender made a solid debut for his new club in the 2-0 win over Wolves that closed a tumultuous week in his career. You just wonder if, at some point on the coach back to Lancashire, he might have afforded himself a wry smile at the news from Celtic Park.

Tony Mowbray has refuted claims from Caldwell that his departure was down to the Parkhead board, and against the manager's wish, but the timing of the [pounds sterling]1million deal conspired against Celtic as they slumped to a damaging 1-1 draw at home to a much-improved Falkirk.

With Glenn Loovens ill and Jos Hooiveld not yet match-fit, Mowbray opened with a centraldefensive partnership of Darren O'Dea and Stephen McManus. O'Dea promptly blundered for the goal scored by the SPL basement dwellers before McManus was forced out with a calf strain before the break.

It culminated in Celtic closing the match with the unlikeliest of silpada Casting Bracelets back threes as they desperately tried, and failed, to avoid falling nine points behind Rangers. There was O'Dea, who had not played since an October outing for loan club Reading, alongside 18-year-old debutant Josh Thompson and the hapless Lee Naylor, who provoked seething anger in the stands as he pinged cross after cross out of play. This was not the kind of squad transformation Mowbray had in mind for January.

Throw in a rare off-day for Aiden McGeady and not even a promising first sighting of [pounds sterling]2m South Korean midfielder Ki Sung Yueng could lift the gloom that found its voice in a chorus of boos at full-time.

Mowbray keeps insisting that Celtic are not far away and will find the formula for consistently positive results. He may well be right, but the very real danger is that such a breakthrough will arrive too late in the championship chase.

The same failings of a forward line lacking in punch and a dithering defence keep returning to haunt Mowbray. Whether the remaining 14 days of the transfer window are enough to exorcise those spectres remains to be seen. But patience is thin on the ground as supporters wonder how their financially-secure club can be floundering adrift of a potless Rangers in the table.

Celtic dominated the recent Old Firm game, but Saturday witnessed five changes to the starting line-up. Like Caldwell, Barry Robson has exited altogether after he was sold to Middlesbrough last week.

Landry N'Guemo is at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Danny Fox joined Loovens on the casualty list after suffering a groin strain in training. In addition, Scott McDonald, is recuperating from minor hernia surgery.

'Decisions had to be made this week,' said the Parkhead boss when asked about the sales of Caldwell and Robson. 'They were made and I have no regrets.

'We can't foresee an illness overnight or injury in training on Friday. That's part and parcel of the job.

'There are no excuses on injuries. I thought the team gave a good account of themselves and yet we didn't get the result. My overriding emotion is disappointment at not winning the match, but credit to Falkirk for how they defended.'
