China vows to strengthen cooperation with Group of 77

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China said here Friday that it will, as always, actively support the work of the Group of 77 (G- 77) and strengthen the cooperation with members of the organization in a bid to jointly safeguard the interest of developing countries.

The statement came as Liu Zhenmin, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at the ceremony for the handover of the G-77 chairmanship from Sudan to Yemen. The ceremony took place at the UN Headquarters in New York on Friday afternoon.

Liu said that China donates 40,000 U.S. dollars in 2010 to the G- 77 Secretariat in order to support the work of the chairman and the Secretariat.

Present at the ceremony were UN brochure printing Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon, Helen Clark, the administrator of the UN Development Program, Sha Zukang, the UN under-secretary-general for economic and social affairs and Supachai Panitchpakdi, the secretary-general of the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

G-77 was founded on pandora beads June 15, 1964 by 77 developing countries, all of which were signatories to the "Joint Declaration of the Seventy- Seven Countries" issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.
