STAFF at the Conde Nast publishing empire in London are anxiously watching the fate of their US parent company, which has just closed its business magazine Portfolio, two years after it launched, because glossy advertising has been plunging in America. The UK market has not been hit so hard yet but Conde Nast has shut German Vanity Fair.

Tina Brown, an ex-Conde Nast editor, whose own Talk magazine didn't last long, feels sorry for Portfolio: "Press coverage of the two-year-old magazine was relentlessly snotty. No one eats their young (or themselves) more Fake Alain Silberstein Watches hungrily than journalists."
