NICK HARRIS was more than happy to have his phone ring at 2am yesterday as he tried to get a good night's sleep.
On the other end of the phone was his young charge Eddie Dawkins.
Dawkins had just won gold in the 1000m sprint at the World Cup track cycling meet in Beijing and he had a question to ask his coach back in Invercargill.
"He wanted to know if he could paper bag printing have a beer. I told him he could have half a glass," a delighted Harris told The Southland Times yesterday.
There was little doubt the 19- year-old deserved to let his hair down, for a bit, after showcasing his talents on the world stage.
He qualified fifth fastest with a superb 10.391sec ride before knocking off kilo time trial gold medallist Miao Shang, of China, in two straight races in the best-of- three quarterfinal.
Dawkins was impressive in accounting for France's Maximillian Levy in the semifinal, again in two straight races, before dominating the final against another Frenchman, Michael D'Almeida, the second qualifier, in two rides.
It was another World Cup cycling event and another gold medal for a Southlander.
Dawkins' gold comes just two months after another Southlander, Tom Scully, won two gold medals at a World Cup meet in Sydney.
Scully was also impressive in Beijing, where the teenager collected three bronze medals.
Harris - who took over as Dawkins' coach in 2008 - was confident leading into the event that the young cyclist had a good chance of pushing the remainder of the field.
However, he also admitted that before Beijing they both felt there was still a wee bit of work to do.
Dawkins' buildup is being fine- tuned with an eye on the big event of the year, the world championships in Denmark in March.
However, Harris agreed it was nice for Dawkins to pick up the Beijing World Cup prize brochure printing along the way.
"We knew he was going good but at this stage he probably isn't as fast or sharp as he could be, so he's thrilled to get this win," Dawkins' coach said.
Dawkins and Scully will arrive in Invercargill at 1.35pm today.
Cycling Southland has urged as many people as possible to get along to Invercargill Airport to welcome the two world-beating Southland cyclists home.
