A POLICE crackdown is being launched on purse thieves operating in the North-East during the run-up to Christmas.

Crime prevention officer for Northumberland Area Command, PC Lawrie Ward, said: "Supermarkets, charity and discount shops can be popular venues for this type of Balenciaga Fake Handbags crime.
"Thieves are both men and women, they often dress smartly and may even have young children with them to appear non-threatening.
"They target busy shopping areas and they know opportunities increase in the run-up to Christmas when there are more people out with more money on them."

Throughout the festive season officers will be making sure town centres remain safe places to shop.
Details of known offenders have been circulated and uniform and plain clothes officers will be operating extra patrols.
