Many of the consumers who aren't driving through drug stores and restaurants are carrying more stuff with them. Women's handbags used to be the subject of jokes, but backpacks and what's in them are serious business.

She and many of her compatriots are carrying a cell phone, a PDA that includes all her business and personal contacts, frequent shopper cards for a half-dozen stores as well as debit and credit cards, a safety or self defense item, a sound source, a pair of running shoes, meds and supplements, dental floss, toothpaste and brush, breath mints, and sunscreen.
In addition to and mixed in with all this stuff, she is carrying a bottle of water and/or a sport or nutrition beverage, and at least one healthy snack.

embroidered patches carrying even more than she is because they are toting more books, more games, and more activity stuff--all with drinks and snacks mixed into the mishmash.
Without question, most of the stuff we are taking everywhere these days is different from the stuff we carried 10, 20 and 30 years ago. Many fewer of us carry a checkbook. With ATMs as common as fast food and convenience stores, we don't even have to carry cash. And the hundred million or so Americans who have given up smoking are no longer carrying cigarettes, lighters, or matches.
